What Powers Do Special Constables Have?
Special constables are appointed under the Police Services Act and given police powers for a specific jurisdiction. They are appointed through the board of the Police Service of the region they work. They can work for police services or directly for organizations. While employed as a special constable, one can not work as a police constable whether full time or part time. Special Constables enforce the Criminal Code of Canada, Mental Health Act, Provincial Offences Act, Trespass to Property Act, Liquor License Act and the rules and regulations of the organization.

- Colleges and Universities
- Community Housing
- Transit Systems
- Court houses
- Provincial and Municipal Police Services
- Other Government Organizations (Parks and Parliament)
What Equipment Do Special Constables Have?
Although Special Constables do not carry firearms they may carry the following:
- Handcuffs
- Baton
- OC Spray
Depending on the organization, they may also have marked vehicles which may be used to transport those in custody directly to the police station.
