Most security guards make between minimum wage to a couple dollars above minimum wage in Ontario when they first start out. Depending on the site and client, you may be able to make up to $20 per hour or more. If you work as in-house security, you may make around $20 to $28 per hour.
In-house security works directly for the employer. Contract security works for a security company that works for a client.
There may also be an opportunity for overtime where you can make 1.5 times your regular hourly wage after working more than a certain number of hours per week.
Here is a list of some possibilities for increased pay as a security guard:
- Increased responsibilities such as a site supervisor or mobile security guard. Security supervisors are classified as NOC-B in Canada
- Increased risk at sites where guards have a tactical vest, handcuffs and a baton
- Last minute requests where a large amount of security guards are needed such as for a strike or labour dispute
- Sites that have higher expectations for professionalism and deportment
