In-Person vs. Online Testing

There are two options for taking your Security Guard Test: in-person and online. Each method has its own set of requirements, but today, we’ll focus primarily on the online testing process, which has become increasingly popular. Keep in mind there are only a few DriveTest Centres that conduct Security Guard Testing, located in major population centers like The Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa. You can find the full list on Serco Canada’s Ontario Security Test website. If you are going to attempt the Ontario Security Test in an in-person format you can find more information on the process directly on Serco Canada’s website.

Key Requirements for the Online Security Guard Test

To take the Security Guard Test online, you need to meet several technical and procedural requirements. Here’s what you need to know:

Training Completion Number

Before anything else, you must obtain a Training Completion Number from a licensed entity like Ontario Security Hub. This Training Completion Number is essential for scheduling your exam. You can find more information on the Security Guard Course process and achieving your Training Completion Number through our older blog posts available directly on our website.

Technical Requirements

Now, let’s go over the technical requirements for the test:

  • Desktop or Laptop: You will need a desktop computer or laptop for video conferencing. Keep in mind, smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices cannot be used for your test.
  • Video Conference Tool: Make sure you have the local installation of the video conference tool on your desktop or laptop. You can find a download guide directly on Serco Canada’s website. Issues with downloading the SGT Online Exam Browser? Take a look at the following Troubleshooting Guide.
  • Webcam and Microphone: Ensure you have a compatible webcam and microphone, built-in or external devices are accepted.
  • Internet Connection: A reliable high-speed internet connection is crucial for a smooth testing experience.

Before your test, be sure to test your equipment like your microphone, webcam, and wifi connection to ensure a smooth exam experience. We recommend testing your camera and microphone by using the camera application on your computer and creating a video to test how the camera and microphone are functioning. You can test your wifi connection by using a website like Speedtest by Oolka.

Exam Day Requirements

On the day of your exam, follow these steps to ensure everything goes smoothly:

  • Log In Early: Log in to your exam portal 15 minutes before the scheduled test time.
  • Video Conference Link: A link to the video conference will appear approximately 15 minutes prior to the start of your test session. Click the Link!
  • Identification: Have your government-issued identification ready to show the invigilator.
  • Clear Workspace: Ensure your workspace is completely clear of any materials.
  • Verification Process: The invigilator will verify each candidate’s identification and workspace individually.
  • Exam Rules and Access: Then, all candidates will be brought back into the main meeting, where the invigilator will go over the rules and share test access information.

Additional Tips for a Smooth Online Exam Experience

Keep in mind, the Ontario Security Test provider, Serco Canada, is very strict with their examinations, so make sure to follow all guidelines carefully. Ensure you do not take your eyes off your screen and stay focused during your attempt. This is very important since taking your eyes off your screen could be seen as cheating. We also recommend you store your phone in another room or in a place where you won’t accidentally take a look at it (place your phone on Do Not Disturb). During your test If you have a question, please raise your hand and the invigilator will answer your questions. That being said, the invigilator will only answer administrative questions.

Here are a few tips to ensure you’re fully prepared for your online test:

  • Test Equipment in Advance: Test your microphone and webcam in advance by using the camera app on your laptop or desktop.
  • Power Supply: Make sure your computer is fully charged or plugged in to avoid any interruptions.
  • Quiet Environment: Find a quiet room without any other individuals so you won’t be disturbed during the test. You must be in a room by yourself!
  • Necessary Identification: Double-check that you have your necessary identification ready before logging in.
  • Breaks During Test: Breaks are not permitted during your test so ensure you use the restroom if needed and do everything you need to do prior to your test.
  • Food and Drink: Keep in mind, eating, drinking and smoking are not permitted during your test.
  • Other Open Browsers: Please ensure all other applications and browsers are closed during your test. We recommend putting your computer on Do Not Disturb mode or turning off notifications.

Remember, you need a 62% to pass the Ontario Security Guard Test and the test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, so you must score 37/60 to pass the test. You will have 90 minutes to complete the test. If you do not complete the test within the required time your test will be automatically submitted.
